- Explore concepts of power, narrative, lineage and embodiment and how they can be used to rise up within today’s political and cultural movements
- Guide students to use creative inquiry to find meaning in the past
- Affirm student narratives that combat ideologies of hate and exclusion within American history and today’s political environment
- Support students to use artistic forms such as mirroring, metaphor, and projection to develop their capacity and skills for social innovation
Rise Up! is excited to also share conversations with Zaretta Hammond, author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, Dr. Shakti Butler, filmmaker and Executive Director of World Trust, and Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Vice President and Artistic Director of Social Impact at the Kennedy Center and writer/ advisor for Rise Up! An American Curriculum.
The Rise Up! methodology embraces practice in community, so we encourage teams to attend together.
About Rise Up! An American Curriculum
Rise Up! Is a collaborative project created by Michelle “Mush” Lee, Jah Yee Woo, Jessa Brie Moreno, Unique Holland, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, and Mariah Rankine-Landers.
As a team, we were collectively moved by the profound artistry of the Broadway hit, Hamilton: An American Musical. We saw the opportunity to expose the deeper truths of “America then” as told by “America now.” We delighted in the complexity of a white historic narrative told through Black and Brown actors with a hip hop score. We developed a free curriculum for classroom and community educators that helps students to explore and express their own personal narrative through writing, artmaking and performance.
